In general, microwaves and dishwashers are not recommended for wooden products. The reason lies in two factors: sudden heat and excessive moisture—both of which place significant stress on wood.

Even when it appears dry, natural wood contains internal moisture and subtly adapts to its environment. This quality gives wood its gentle touch and the deepening patina that develops over time. At the same time, it makes the material sensitive to rapid temperature changes and heavy moisture exposure.

Microwaves heat objects by vibrating the water molecules inside them. When wood is microwaved, the internal moisture heats rapidly, causing expansion from within. This imbalance may lead to cracking, warping, or distortion—even if no damage is immediately visible.

Dishwashers expose items to high-temperature washing followed by forced drying. During washing, wood absorbs water; during drying, that moisture is quickly drawn out. This intense cycle of absorption and release can result in warping, splitting, or surface roughness. Strong detergents may also strip away the wood’s natural oils and protective finishes over time.

Some wooden products are specially designed to be microwave- or dishwasher-safe. These typically feature thick coatings or advanced finishes that help resist heat and moisture.
